Puruntu / Purudu First Function

This function is done on the 9th day after baby born in our family. Some people do it on the 11th day and some on the 13th day. in Senthil's house, they used to perform Ganapathy Homam.

Until this purudu is performed mother and baby are not allowed to go outside or to temple. Also, outside people are also not allowed to visit baby and mother. But nowadays no one is following this. There is a healthy meaning for this ritual, basically, it's like giving some time to the new born and mother to settle down before the flood of visitors in. It is mainly to put away a woman's uncleanness, the house wherein a birth has happened.

Coming to the procedure, basically, the day starts with the first bath after delivery with turmeric powder, besan, neem leaves and oil. It's natural way taking of bath and it's believed that the water is going to be medicine rich. But nowadays it is changed I had to take bath on 2nd itself with stitches in the hospital itself due to various reasons (mainly hygiene).

Once the bath is over below mentioned procedure starts, this should be done by checking the auspicious time.

Items/things needed
- Boiled ulavalu (Horse Gram)
- Rice
- Yellow Thread to tie on hip of the baby (Molathadu)
- Kajal (Vengaipal Pottu)
- New clothes for mother and baby.
- Neem Leave, unfortunately, we didn't get any so we got plant leaves from behind our house
- Coconut
- Betel leaves
- Nava Thaniyam
- White stone to keep as Lord Ganesha
- Kathir (Steel rod like thing which is to keep in the hand by the mother
- Jewels for Baby ( Gifted by both our Parents & From my Sister's family)

After doing the rituals incorporate all the mixtures (Rice, Ulavalu, & Navathaniyam) into the soil and have to stamp that by the mother holding the baby. Since the weather was worse I did not go out with the baby to stamp. Senthil helped mum to do and at last diya has to be placed on top.

Then wear the new clothes to the baby and place her on the tray. Tie the Yellow thread with gold on her hip.
